Representing Segment-tone Connections in the Human Cortex: Evidence from the Rapid Hebbian Learning of Novel Tone Words7

چکیده

Spoken language is an important form of human communication. The capacity to learn new spoken words is a basic brain function for any individual during the life span. With exponential growth of information exchange, people encounter a large amount of novel words, such as neologism (e.g., Google), jargon (e.g., app), and terminology (e.g., optogenetics). In experimental contexts, word-like pseudo-words are used to represent novel words. A general practice for creating novel words is to derive novel segment patterns from existing words by replacing one

Hebbian and anti-Hebbian spike-timing-dependent plasticity of human cortico-cortical connections.

Learning of new skills may occur through Hebbian associative changes in the synaptic strength of cortical connections [spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP)], but how the precise temporal relationship of the presynaptic and postsynaptic inputs determines the STDP effects in humans is poorly understood. We used a novel paired associative stimulation protocol to repeatedly activate the short-l...

CEO power and earnings announcement tone with emphasis on the role of board oversight

The value of earnings reporting depends on the information it provides to the capital market. In the meantime, managers with the power and control of the situation interfere not only in quantity but also in the quality of reporting, so they declare profit in a more positive tone. However, supervisory management leads to protecting shareholder interests and reducing agency problems, limiting the...

Bimodal stimulus timing-dependent plasticity in primary auditory cortex is altered after noise exposure with and without tinnitus.

Central auditory circuits are influenced by the somatosensory system, a relationship that may underlie tinnitus generation. In the guinea pig dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN), pairing spinal trigeminal nucleus (Sp5) stimulation with tones at specific intervals and orders facilitated or suppressed subsequent tone-evoked neural responses, reflecting spike timing-dependent plasticity (STDP). Furtherm...

Learning and receptive field plasticity.

The cerebral cortex has long been known to play a central role in the storage and retrieval of long-term memories. Therefore it would be expected that mechanisms of cortical plasticity underlying information storage should be found in the cortex of adult animals, and they should be manifest as an alteration in the functional specificity of cells, in the functional architecture of cortex, and in...
